This week, Frankston Basketball is proud to take part in Pink Sports Day, led by Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) — and this year, we’re rallying behind one of our own.
Just five days before her 40th birthday, Sam Small, the team manager of the Langwarrin Lazers U12 Hawks, was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. Sam is a loving mum to three boys, a devoted wife, a disability support worker, and a long-time community volunteer. She’s one of the many women whose life changed in an instant — and whose strength has inspired those around her.
Every day in Australia, 58 people are diagnosed with breast cancer — over 20,000 expected in 2025, including 217 men. A diagnosis doesn’t just affect one person. It ripples through families, workplaces, sporting clubs, and entire communities.
That’s why this week, we’re asking all coaches, players, referees, team managers and spectators to wear pink in a show of support for everyone facing breast cancer.
“Sam’s hope in sharing her story is to raise awareness about recognising the signs and symptoms — and to encourage others to get checked if something doesn’t feel right,” says her husband, Tim, who also coaches the Lazers.
To help support the Small family through Sam’s treatment — including several months of chemotherapy, surgery, and recovery — the family has created a GoFundMe page to assist with the financial burden.

Let’s turn our stadium pink this week and show that the basketball community stands together.
