PLB DRAFT NIGHT PREVIEW – MEN

PLB DRAFT NIGHT PREVIEW – MEN

How will the draft night work?

The draft will run with a snake format over 5 rounds. Each captain makes their first-round pick. When the first round is over, the team that picked last in the first round picks first in the second round — in other words, the draft ‘snakes’ back on itself. The first round will be decided via ‘lottery’ and communicated with captains prior to the draft. Rounds 1 to 4 offer single players at a NBL1/Big V level. Round 5 will offer packs of Big V Youth League / VJBL level developing players. Nominations for the draft have now closed.

Who is exciting?

Durrell Mcdonald – Durrell “Nugget” Mcdonald is one of the most explosive guards in the NBL1 competition, he brings with him NBL experience (Melbourne United) and will be one of the most exciting players in the league.

Ben Ayer – A development player for the Adelaide 36ers (NBL), Ben Ayer spent 2019 Winter with the Championship winning NBL1 Nunawading Spectres.

Adam Thoseby – Former Sydney Kings wing, Adam Thoseby spent 2019 winter with the Knox Raiders in the NBL1. He was also a member of British national junior team at FIBA Under 20 European Championships and a member of the British Commonwealth games side in 2018. Thoseby will add elite scoring to any side that drafts him.

Angus Howey – The only player in draft pool currently above 6’7, at 6’10 Angus Howey might be a steal to be picked up in the draft.

What does each captain need?

Dain Swetalla – With the size of the twin towers of Simon Conn and himself, Swetalla is expected to look for guard/shooters to support Tom Wright.

Daniel Trist – Similar to Swetalla, Trist has great size and rebounding ability with Najeal Young and himself and experience in NBL legend Rhys Carter, Trist is expected to look for more depth with guards and possibly some young talent to mentor.

Dillon Stith – Stith has recruited himself size in Geremy McKay and point guard duties in Issac Turner. Stith is expected to look for more talent at the wing positions.

Igor Hadziomerovic – Iggy himself is already athletic and able to score, between Tom Garrett, Alister McDonald and himself, Hadziomoeroic is expected to look for some size to go up against the bigger bodies on the other rosters.

Lucas Barker – With the size of Tim Lang and scoring from Sean MacDonald, Barker is expected to look for some athleticism to help the side compete with some of the high flyers in the competition.

Lachlan Barker – Having lost (Callum) Barker who is staying in Hobart for the time being, (Lachlan) Barker is expected to look to replace big Cal and find some more assistance for himself and Corey Standerfer by drafting another strong guard or two.
