Return to Sport Update – 1 June
The following is an update from Basketball Victoria regarding the status of leagues, competitions and tournaments.
Basketball Victoria, in consultation with our commissions, associations and league delegates, has decided to postpone or cancel a number of basketball related competitions and events in the best interest of public health and safety.
We have proactively taken this step to ensure the community is aware of the upcoming schedule, can make alternative arrangements if required and to ensure athletes are allowed enough time to prepare and condition their bodies for any rescheduled games or events.
These are not decisions we take lightly, but with the current situation unfolding in Victoria we have determined this course of action to be the safest and in the best interest of the basketball community.
VICTORIAN JUNIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Basketball Victoria, in consultation with the Junior Representative Commission and VJBL delegates, has cancelled the upcoming Friday 4 June VJBL round. This round will not be replayed or caught up due to previous catch-up games held for the February lockdown using the reserve week. Further updates regarding fixture updates for all VJBL competitions will be made next week.
Basketball Victoria and the Senior Representative Commission have decided to postpone all Big V games scheduled for the weekend of 5-6 June. We are working through re-scheduling options and will have further announcements regarding the Big V fixture as soon as possible.
Basketball Victoria has postponed all Victorian based games of NBL1 South scheduled for 5-6 June, with the second leg of the Tasmanian derby to be the only games of the round to proceed. Hobart will now travel to Ulverstone to play a double header against the Launceston Tornadoes and North West Thunder on Saturday evening. A revised fixture will be issues in the near future including the previously postponed 28-30 May games.
ALL OTHER BASKETBALL EVENTS, COMPETITIONS AND PROGRAMS
All Basketball Victoria school events scheduled until Monday 7 June including Bulla Hoop Time and the Victorian College Championships, will be cancelled. Alternative arrangements for these events and competitions will be announced at a later date.
Victoria Metropolitan and Victoria Country under-16 state team training sessions have been cancelled until further notice.
NATIONAL JUNIOR CLASSIC
Basketball Victoria has made the decision to postpone the National Junior Classic, originally scheduled to be held from 12-14 June 2021. We are looking at alternative dates during the September school holidays, and will have further updates regarding a re-scheduled event in the upcoming weeks.
We appreciate the support of clubs and associations throughout this difficult period and thank the entire basketball community for your understanding and patience.
