CELEBRATING FIVE YEARS – FDBA’s ALL ABILITIES PROGRAM

Today marks the five-year anniversary of Frankston Basketball’s All Abilities Program, a groundbreaking initiative that began in August 2019 with just three participants.

Over the years, the program has grown remarkably, reaching a peak of 32 participants in Term 1 of 2023.

The introduction of an All-Abilities competition in Term 2, 2023, marked a new chapter, with over 50 participants now actively competing in eight teams.

The competition’s success would not have been possible without the foundation laid by the original All Abilities Program.

Frankston Basketball’s All Abilities Program is open to all ages, skill levels, and disabilities, providing an inclusive space for participants to enjoy sports and recreation.

The Term 3, 2024 Program continues to focus on building independence, turn-taking skills, and hand-eye coordination, all while fostering friendships in a fun, social, and low-pressure environment.

The program is overseen by Programs Support Officer Tanya Thomas and conducted by experienced Frankston Basketball coaches.

To ensure participants get the most out of each session, visual aids and demonstrations are used, and participants are encouraged to bring items that help them feel comfortable, such as noise-cancelling headphones, iPads, or communication devices.

An essential feature of the program is the sensory room, a calming environment for individuals who may feel overstimulated.

Currently, the sensory room is a makeshift space in the FDBA boardroom, but the program’s success has led to plans for a purpose-built sensory room as part of the Frankston Basketball Stadium redevelopment in 2025.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the incredible journey of the All-Abilities Program and look forward to its continued growth and impact in the years to come.
