At Frankston Basketball, we believe the game is for everyone, no matter your age, skill level, or how many years it’s been since you picked up a ball (or if you ever have!). And this Winter 2025 season, a brand-new team is doing it their own way.
Introducing: The Breakers Mums.
Formed from a group of passionate parents from the Belvedere Breakers Basketball Club, this team is the first ever club-based side to join our long-standing Monday Morning Women’s competition – a social league that’s been part of the FDBA since 2017. You’ll usually find these women coaching, team managing, or supporting their kids from the sidelines on Saturdays. But now, they’ve stepped onto the court themselves.
They’ve got matching club kits. They’ve got team spirit. They’ve got energy and enthusiasm in spades. What they don’t have? Much basketball experience.
Team captain Cheryl told us how she was finding it:
“I’m 61, still fit and still love the game, I was finding it hard to get into a team and I am loving playing with these lovely girls.”
Teammate Laura said:
“It’s great fun and great fitness, we have a lot of laughs on the court. As soon as my kids get home from school on a Monday they ask me how basketball went and if I got any goals.”
The inception of the Breakers Mums marks a positive turning point for the Monday Morning Women’s competition, which like many community sports, was hit hard post-COVID. At its peak, the competition featured up to ten teams. But following the pandemic, numbers dipped significantly, and the Summer 2024/25 season unfortunately didn’t go ahead.
This season, however, we’ve seen a welcome rebuild. Four teams are now competing: the freshly formed Zoomies (made up of individuals brought together by the FDBA), returning favourites Wii Not Fit and Perfect Strangers and of course the Breakers Mums. The addition of the Breakers Mums has brought a fresh energy to the competition, along with a strong reminder that it’s never too late to get involved.
Tanya Thomas, President of the Belvedere Breakers said:
“We wanted to show that you don’t have to be a basketballer to play basketball. We’re just a bunch of mums having a go, learning as we go and having a laugh along the way. Hopefully other women see us and think, if they can do it, maybe I can too.”
The Breakers Mums haven’t quite notched their first win yet but they’re winning in all the ways that matter. Building friendships, improving fitness, and embracing the chaos that comes with trying something new.
And though they aren’t currently able to play at Frankston Basketball Stadium due to ongoing redevelopment works, the action has shifted to the modern and freshly built Jubilee Park Stadium, giving the competition a fantastic temporary home.
To the Breakers Mums, you’ve reminded us what grassroots sport is truly about. Connection, fun, and simply giving it a go.
You are exactly what the Monday Morning Women’s comp needed.
