After four incredible years with Frankston & District Basketball Association, we bid farewell to Tanya Thomas, who is departing from her role as our Inclusion Officer.
Tanya has been a hugely valued member of the Frankston Basketball team, and while we’re excited for what’s next for her, she’ll be deeply missed across our community.
“Over the past four years, Tanya has helped strengthen inclusion across our association through the programs she delivered and the relationships she built. Her work has provided opportunities for many people to get involved in basketball which has resulted in recognition within the broader Basketball Victoria community. We thank Tanya for her contribution and wish her well in her next role.” said FDBA GM of Operations Mitchell Condick.
A legacy of inclusion and opportunity
Tanya’s impact in inclusion will leave a lasting legacy.
Tanya was the driving force behind the creation of our All Abilities competitions (now known as Inclusion competition), building a thriving program with multiple divisions, dedicated referees, and a grand final day for all registered teams.
She also pioneered an Australian-first vision impaired basketball program, which has since grown into what is now known as Bell Ball, and helped establish a wheelchair basketball program. Tanya’s work also supported our older community members through the hugely popular Walking Basketball program and matches.
“From day one, my focus was on setting the tone and ensuring that inclusion in sport was something we genuinely led with – so that those who come after us know it’s important and understand why. I’m incredibly proud of the culture we’ve shaped and the pathways that have been built.”
Recognition and awards
Tanya’s commitment has contributed to well-deserved recognition for both herself and the association, including:
- Frankston Basketball – Inclusion Association of the Year (2023 and 2024)
- Basketball Victoria’s Inclusive Volunteer of the Year (2025)
- Sport Initiative of the Year for the Blind and Low Vision Basketball program (now Bell Ball), at the Victorian Disability Sport & Recreation Awards
“Tanya has been instrumental in developing and growing our inclusion programs. We thank Tanya wholeheartedly for her efforts and wish her and her family well for the future,” said FDBA CEO Wayne Holdsworth.

Tanya’s work has created opportunities for hundreds of people to play basketball who may not otherwise have had the chance. On behalf of the entire association, we thank Tanya for the lasting impact she’s made and wish her every success in what comes next. 💙🏀
