We have a lot of excellent people involved in our Blues program, and none more-so than Abby Chernishoff!
Abby is a former Blues junior, who most recently captained our Youth League Women’s team to the Big V Youth League 2 Championship title! She spent time in the NBL1 team this season, regularly called upon to provide some size and strength. Taking charges are her speciality and you can guarantee at least one per game, no matter what level. She has promised me that she will teach her secret technique to all of our junior girls!
Not only is Abby busy forging a career in basketball at the senior level, she is also an amazing coach. Alongside fellow NBL1/YL stalwart Tori Jackson, she assisted WNBL and NBL1 star Stephanie Reid with our 12.6 girls. Abby has now stepped up to head coach the 12.3’s, with Tori as her assistant.
She was nominated for Aussie Hoops Coach of the Year for the outstanding work that she is doing in our Regional Academy space, also taking the reigns as the lead coach of the new All Abilities Program.
As if all of this was not enough! Abby recently gave up an entire week of the school holidays, where she could have been working and earning money, to be an assistant coach with the U14.1 girls in Ballarat.
For only the third time in club history, the Blues qualified for the U14 Australian National Club Championships, held in Ballarat. Abby was one of the stars of the show! She has studied physiotherapy for three years, so was able to be an assistant/trainer for the week. The girls lined up to have their very sore and tired young bodies magically restored back to working order, before and after each game.
It was a big workload for Abby, but she did not complain once, she humoured the girls with plenty of banter, as they planned her wedding (she’s not engaged) and what her children should be called (she’s not pregnant). She was a great sport and knew this was a good way for the girls to let off steam and distract themselves from the high pressure situation they were in.
Abby is an invaluable resource for the Blues program, always ready to lend a hand, no job being either too great or too small. I cannot speak highly enough of Abby, she is a huge asset to our club and 100 percent bleeds blue!
