Welcome to my first quarterly President’s message for 2020.
Firstly, let me say that I hope you and your family are safe and healthy as we all try to cope with COVID-19.
We are living in extraordinary challenging circumstances and its times like this that we reflect on what is important in life, love, health, family and friends.
Below are some important topics that I would like to share with you:
Due to stage 3 restrictions and the extension of the State of Emergency by the Victorian Government, Basketball Victoria suspended domestic basketball competition until at least 31st May.
Basketball Victoria are working closely with the Victorian Government on a plan to reactivate basketball back into the community. Wayne and I will be attending a video conference this coming Thursday with Basketball Victoria and all other associations to hear the direction Basketball Victoria intend to implement.
Like Basketball Victoria, the priority of the FDBA will be to ensure the association reactivates with the health and safety of our participants, officials and staff being paramount.
Over the Christmas period, courts 5 & 6 received a significant makeover.
New rings and backboards have been installed as well as both courts being re-configured to allow proper runoff between court 6 sidewall and the baseline on both courts. The area also received a fresh coat of paint with the surrounding walls and grandstand now looking almost new. Work in the visitors change room has also been completed with new skylights, lighting and a splash of paint.
We also made some minor changes to the foyer area with the vending machine being relocated to near the referee’s room, new carpet at the front entrance and table and chairs installed for patron seating.
I would like to thank Ernie Gugler who kindly donated the table and chairs.
As I have previously mentioned we will continue to invest in stadium improvements to provide better facilities for our members.
As you would know, the NBL1 season was cancelled in March. This was extremely disappointing as both the men and women teams had extremely strong playing rosters and high hopes for the season.
Unfortunately, the cancellation meant that we had to say good-bye to our import players in David & Josh who have both returned to America, whilst Najeal has elected to stay in Australia. Tahlia and Lara have both returned home to their family properties in NSW.
We remain hopeful that in the near future NBL1 will return and we can be reunited with members from both teams.
The 2020 AGM will be held on Monday 1st June at 6.30pm.
Due to COVID19, this year’s meeting will be a non-attendance meeting with the meeting and voting being conducted online. Further details regarding the meeting can be found here.
Vale Merv Hindmarsh, Anne Sales & Klaas Froling:
Recently the passing of Merv Hindmarsh, Anne Sales and Klaas Froling has saddened many members of the association. Merv, Anne and Klaas were highly respected people who made significant contributions to the association, dedicating their time and effort into making the association great.
On behalf of the FDBA Board of Management, I offer our sincere condolences to family members.
In closing, I would like to thank FDBA staff Wayne, Dion, Mitch, Jarryd, Daniel, Jenny and Bailey for all their hard work and efforts during this difficult time. The team have been working tirelessly on various scenarios to ensure we are ready to re-open the doors once we receive the green light.
To our members and participants, thank you for your patience and continued support, fingers crossed that basketball will be back very soon!
