It has been a very busy start to the year for the refereeing group, Covid has taken its toll on our member base losing a number of referees during the shut down of competitions.

Now we are back up and running again we have run 2 referee school since competitions were suspended in March 2019. During the lockdown we were able to run a school via Zoom with 16 members of the Blues program, everyone who participated in this school then went on to complete their practical component and had been graded by the end of 2020.

Our most recent school had 21 participants, you would no doubt have seen them all running around completing their practical training on court over the past few weeks. This recent school will be hitting the court in their green shirts at the start of the winter competitions after school holidays.

For our current refereeing group, we have run our first B Grade referee course to help further develop the current group of officials. The 2-week course was completed by 13 of our referees with the practical component still ongoing.

Another program that we are working on is the implementation of the Elite Referee program. This will see our top referees as well as up-and-coming officials put through intensive coaching on the Monday A Grade Men’s competition. We will be inviting current and former NBL1 referees and referee coaches to share their knowledge with the group.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with Saturday Junior Grand Final day. We see many of our youngest referees involved with the Saturday program. On a day that can take the atmosphere and intensity of games taken to a new level, I feel that all of our referees stepped up to a new level on the day. The positive support from participants, coaches, and parents on the day towards the games and referees was phenomenal. For that the referee group would like to say a big thank you to everyone for your support and positive attitude towards every game.

Over the next few months, we will still have a busy program ahead. We will be running our next beginner referee course in early May, we will have our next A Grade referee course that will see some of our top B Grade referees work towards their top domestic grade. There will be an increased focus in the coming weeks on the coaching and development of our current referees to make sure they are continuing to work hard and improve their on-court performance.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the following referees who have been been working hard since late last year to be selected on to various Basketball Victoria Referee Panels:
